It is bold, colourful and mesmerising in every detail, and I cannot believe it took me nearly 30 years to see it. That was in January 2023. I’m talking about Sicilian artist Renato Guttuso’s famous 1974 painting ‘La Vucciria’. Housed in the gothic 13th century Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri on Piazza Marina, Palermo.

To find Rogier van der Weyden On my way back home to Australia last year, after some summer time in Sicily, I spent a few days in London. I was keen to see some of the 15th century Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden's paintings in London’s National Portrait Gallery.

An intriguing smile There is a portrait hanging in a small museum in Cefalu of an unknown man which 'some claim ... is a pirate from the Sicilian island of Lipari'.
Simply titled, The Unknown Man, (Ritratto di Ignoto) this small oil, 31cm x 24.5cm, is the masterpiece of Antonello da Messina, painted in 1470.
