Trapani: quiet, summer moments

This summer, wandering Trapani's historic centre:

Light filled, hot days; cool evening breezes; a room by the sea; the call of morning seagulls; mulberry granita with brioche; a beautiful painting attributed to van Dyke in the Church of San Lorenzo; a dosing poodle in a near empty pew of San Lorenzo as a small group of women recited the evening rosary; and perfumed rose petals scattered on the street outside; a quiet walk along La Mura della Tramontana at sunset.

A summer night of love and music at Segesta

  The 'loveliest' Greek temple Early last month, after a few quiet days in the light filled port city of Trapani, my travelling companion and I started back towards Palermo to spend a night close by the Greek temple of Segesta.

 

We pulled off the A29 and headed towards, what John Julius Norwich has called, Sicily’s ‘loveliest’ ancient Greek temple. I glimpsed the top of the temple golden in the 31 degrees C heat on a cloudless blue day.
