The Sicilian House team enjoyed making lemon granita, the quintessential Sicilian ice to ease the heat during an Australian Christmas this year.
Granita, often infused with lemon, jasmine, cinnamon and other exotic flavours, has long been a staple during the heat of a Sicilian summer.
Famed Sicilian writer and cook, Mary Taylor Simeti tells that granita, an Arabic inspired ice, has its roots in Mount Etna when the Arabs used the ice of Etna to chill and dilute their sweet fruit syrups, sarbat, over 1000 years ago.

I enjoyed a sense of Sicilian baroque theatre as I slowly wondered Catania’s cathedral earlier this year.
Dedicated to Saint Agata, the revered patron saint of Catania and built by the famed Vaccarini in the early 18th century after the devastation of the 1693 earthquake it sits on the grand Piazza del Duomo.

To leave the famed Corleone and take the meandering SS118 north to the tiny hamlet of Ficuzza is to journey through landscape grand and mesmerising which casts a spell.
I travelled the 20 kilometres from Corleone to Ficuzza (Ficuzza is 45 kilometres south of Palermo) on the SS118 this year in the Sicilian spring as part of a road trip through the interior. The work of Persephone, the goddess of vegetation, revered in Sicily since antiquity, filled the landscape.
