Afternoons in Polizzi: Some Recollections

From the A19, (the main arterial between Palermo and Catania)  take the meandering Tremonzelli road up from the Imera valley to noble Polizzi Generosa on a warm afternoon and enter into Sicily’s interior. It brings you past medieval, baronial farming estates, pastures of grain, groves of olives, ginestra by the roadside  and seasonal wild sweetpeas.

To travel south east from the capital Palermo during the Sicilian spring in mid -May and head for Noto in time for Sicily’s unrivalled flower festival - L’infiorata which runs every 3rd weekend in May makes for a great few days. I am Suzanne Turrisi and I want to share with you the story of how this all happened – that one day in September 2003 I returned to the enigmatic Sicily with my husband and youngest daughter armed with a notebook with names of stone Sicilian villages in search of a house. I wanted to discover more about this complex island, a place that still casts a captivating hold over me after 17 years of returning time after time.
