Mist moves quietly
The low swirling mist that gently rolls into the streets of Polizzi Generosa in certain months of the year adds to Polizzi’s otherworldliness. Its medieval, pale stone buildings are brushed in a soft grey and when it lifts the village returns to its lovely faded glory.
From the terrace of the house, I have seen the mist move in silently from the depths of the valleys below and from a distance Polizzi sits just above the sea of clouds, almost hovering. This phenomenon is known as La Maretta – a little sea.
Brilliant sunsets, winter and a blue that's so blue
At 917 m sitting against craggy towering mountains Polizzi is perched high on a long spur. Mists swirl, the sun sets radiantly against folds of mountains and the summer skies are often a brilliant blue and the colder days of winter with occasional snow let the village hunker down and recuperate a bit after the holiday festiveness of spring, summer and early autumn.
A festive summer
Polizzi entices in every season and when I return for two weeks in August, I will feel the welcomed summer bustle and be captivated again by the town’s energetic, and drama filled Hazelnut Festival.
I will write about this much-loved festival again, sometime after August. The festa is in honor of the delicious small hazelnut. Polizzi was a producer of great hazelnuts in decades past. Groves dotted the mountain slopes close by.
I like returning.
