Some of Polizzi's magic

Posted by Suzanne Turrisi on 31 Oct 2019

Polizzi Generosa

I have chosen lots of photos (some of which have been seen before) and jotted lists of things I like about Polizzi Generosa and they appear here to give a feel for this small village in the Madonie Mountains which I call home when I am in Sicily.

Festivals, silence and art

Walking the streets, the silence, the architecture, the flowers of spring and summer, the view from the terrace of the house, reacquainting with the house and the village, bountiful seasonal produce,

Sicilian wine, art behind closed church doors, century old processions and festivals, the town bands playing as they walk the streets,

Local cherries

The main street Via Garibaldi

Summer magnolia

Via Garibaldi during a festival

Via Roma with the portico of The Mother Church bottom right

16th century Madonna del Carmine by Johannes de Matta in the church of Carmine, often closed doors

Back street

Rediscovering the house

The Mother Church on Via Roma

From the balcony of the house overlooking rooftops and houses to the countryside

Side door of the Church of Sant'Orsola

The Sorrowful Madonna ready for the solemn Good Friday procession

The feast of the Holy Crucifix in May

One of the village bands

Slow lunches, local sausages, balconies

and doorways, a 15th century Flemish triptych worthy of the National gallery in London, quiet stone streets, a long lunch at one of the  good local restaurants, enjoying a hidden garden tucked in behind an ancient palazzo, eating the delicious local sausages,

drinking locally made liqueurs and visiting local potter Giovanni D'Angelo's  shop on the main street,

Balcony on Via Dogana on the night of the Good Friday procession

A favourite on Via Carlo V

Local oranges and fresh nespole enjoyed at restaurant Donna Lavia just outside of Polizzi

Detail from the splendid 15th century Flemish triptych attributed to Rogier van der Weyden housed in the Mother Church on Via Roma

Triptych detail

The triptych in full

The hidden garden of the restaurant I Templari

Local liqueur I Templari

Always loved, the little brown door on Via Carlo V

Pottery tiles by Giovanni D'Angelo, on Via Garibaldi

Buon Pranzo, nature and living high up near the mountains

hearing buongiorno, buon pranzo and buona notte, the natural beauty of the Madonie mountains and Polizzi’s unrivalled majestic setting on a spur 917 m above the sea.

And being in a mountain village where there is an ice cream season.

Driving up the Piano Battaglia road

Looking from Piazza Trinata a wonderful belvedere

Country lane outside Polizzi

Ice Cream at Bar Cristallo ready for the 'ice cream season' in the mountains.

Salve
