A lava stone beach and a house on the Ionian Sea

Posted by Suzanne Turrisi on 09 Oct 2018

Lava down to the sea

On the Ionian coast of Sicily, not far north of Cyclops’ mythical rocks, near the Riviera dei Ciclopi there is the small seaside village of Santa Tecla.

The town’s beach is lava rock- an old volcanic flow from Mt Etna- smooth, dark grey lava stone which goes to the water’s edge.

A Sicilian House by the Ionian

In early August, after a seafood lunch at Aci Trezza (on Cyclops’ Riviera) I went on to Santa Tecla, stopped alongside the local cafe/trattoria and walked down a tiny side street to the sea.

On the left side of the narrow lane an occupied house opened right to the street and on the other side was a near derelict sea facing house with a 'for sale' sign on the garden gate.

Summer and dreaming

A couple of beach umbrellas were near the water’s edge and swimmers were bathing. I sat on a rock in front of the old house and my thoughts turned to a Sicilian house with a garden opening to a lava beach by the Ionian sea.

Salve

Suzanne
