Festivals & events in Polizzi Generosa

San Gandolfo

7th Wednesday after Easter & the 3rd Sunday of September

The patron Saint of Polizzi Generosa (San Gandolfo) is venerated in 2 wondrous festivals. The first is 7 weeks after Easter. This celebrates his first miracle made in the 13th century. It is held at his hermitage outside the village and is a day of veneration, music and the eating of special Sicilian pastries. The second festival venerating San Gandolfo is a major 3 day festival with its main procession on  the 3rd Sunday in September. In this main procession the silver sacrophagus c. 1549 which contains his relics is paraded solemnly through the village in the evening.  The first procession however  is held on the Saturday evening when the wooden statue of San Gandolfo is carried from the Cheisa Madre and through the streets. The festivities are magical and devotional. It is a celebration which allows the inquisitive traveller to take a privileged look into Sicilian culture and life. It is truly evocative.

The Holy Crucifix

Starts May 1st

This 3 day festival of blessings, music, food, processions and ritual is to bless the wheat fields which surround Polizzi and the harvest. It is an ancient mournful and joyous festival.

La Sagra delle Nocciole (The Hazelnut Festival)

Last weekend in August

This is 2 days of festivities-music, dance, food and history. The festival honours the hazelnut. Hazelnut groves surround Polizzi and its hazelnuts are famous for their texture and taste. Bancarelle (stalls) are constructed using authentic materials. They must depict a scene from history which captures the life of those times authentically. The best bancarelle is rewarded. The festival finishes with a Sicilian cart parade through the main street. It is a spectacular display of ancient Sicilian carts, costumes and Sicilian music. It is an animated and fun festival.

Lo Sfoglio

Late August

Another very important festival which is about savouring this ancient monastic cake made only in Polizzi Generosa. It is a celebration of food, and ancient tradition. Other delicious Sicilian pastries are also tasted at this simple yet culturally significant festival.

Santa Lucia

December 13th

The statue of St Lucy, the patron Saint of eyesight, is solemnly paraded through the wintery lit streets of Polizzi Generosa. A devoted congregation chants prayers as they follow her through the cobbled stoned streets. The town band plays sorrowful and haunting music which befits this devotion.
